This experiment is long overdue, and dedicated to one of my earliest readers who really wanted evidence about whether or not burr grinders are actually better than blade grinders.

Hey, it’s a totally fair request.

Generally the burr vs. blade grinder only surfaces in the espresso-making world, where I think there is no question that blade grinders aren’t capable of making good espresso.

But the argument about burr vs. blade really needed to take place in the drip coffee world too. So I decided to do a blind taste test on myself, and here’s what I found:

  • You cant do a blind test on yourself, by definition. Blind test means the subject is unaware of which is the test and which is the control.

  • A. Scientist is absolutely correct. By definition, you cannot perform a valid blind test with yourself as both investigator and subject. You might just as well taste both, without any attempt to “blind” the comparison, and say which you like best, or get some knowledgeable person to set up and conduct a valid test for you.
