- Very simple and easy-to-use design
- Fast brewing - less than 5 minutes
- Easy to clean carafe
- Quiet brewing
- Coffee is hot
- Large footprint - measures 7x14x16 inches
- No water-level markers in the carafe or water reservoir
- Water needs to be pre-heated for 15 minutes (assuming you unplug the machine after each use)
- Common defect results in weak coffee
Aside from the incredibly long name, the Bunn Velocity Brewer has an incredibly short brewing time.
This is the main benefit of this popular home coffee maker. But don’t stop reading now, does this machine really live up to its promises when it comes to speed?
First, let’s take a look at the highlights.
Please note: Although I am reviewing this top rated coffee maker, I have no experience using it. Instead, I’ve summarized all of the most helpful reviews on this coffee maker from around the web. I’ve done my best to make this review completely unbiased, making sure to cover both the positives and negatives. Visit the about page to learn more…or feel free to contact with any questions or concerns you may have.
- The machine has just one button: for heating the water reservoir.
- Grounds basket is made from solid plastic and surrounded by stainless steel
- Bunn has great customer service
Is the coffee flavorful? Does the coffee stay hot?
These seemed to be the two questions that were faced with the most contention. Many reviewers noted that the coffee was weak and/or didn’t stay hot for very long, even when pre-heating the carafe. So what’s out take?
Coffee is flavorful, assuming no defect
One very helpful reviewer noted that her coffee was weak, seemingly as the result of the sprayer partially missing the coffee grounds. After bringing the issue up to Bunn, the reviewer was notified that they had a defective unit, and received a replacement that solved the issue of the flavorless coffee.
So I recommend you check if your coffee grounds are getting completely wet if you are having flavor issues. If not, check with Bunn. They have great customer service and are sure to get your machine working as it should.
One other thing to note in regards to flavor is that the paper filters that come with the Bunn Velocity Brew tend to sacrifice some of the strong flavors many coffee drinkers love. For the coffee drinkers who like grit and lots of body in their coffee, I recommend a re-usable filter.
Coffee is hot, assuming proper preparation
First off, you need to make sure your carafe has been filled with hot water (and of course, poured out) before brewing your coffee. This is thermos 101 here, so don’t leave this step out.
Secondly, you should make sure your machine has been plugged in for at least 15 minutes, allowing the water in the tank to be sufficiently heated before brewing.
By following these steps, you will get a pretty hot cup of coffee.
The Bunn ST Velocity Brew falls right in the middle of cheap and expensive (as far as I’m concerned). Still, its overall value is supported by the machine’s solid durability.
Score: 3 stars
The Coffee Quality
According to most reviewers, the coffee this coffee maker brews tastes great, assuming that you don’t have a defective one (which a handful of reviewers have experienced).
Score: 3.5 stars
The Coffee Maker Quality
The Bunn ST Velocity Brew is well-designed and well-constructed. Made mostly of stainless steel, from the filter basket to the carafe, you won’t find anything cheap about this coffee maker. Still, there are defective ones out there which retracts from the overall score a bit.
Score: 4 stars
Ease of Use
No bells and whistles here. This coffee maker is as straightforward as it gets. You do need to have water in the tank pre-heated for about 15 minutes before you can begin brewing, but this is clearly explained in the instructions.
Score: 5 stars
Bunn is known for building coffee makers with long lives. With almost no reports of this coffee machine dying after a short period, it’s pretty safe to say that you will get that same Bunn durability with this model.
Score: 5 stars
If you don’t have a problem with pre-heated water, leaving your machine plugged in all of the time, or the inability to measure your water input, then this is probably a good choice for your kitchen. The fact is, the reviews on this machine are all over the place given peoples’ personal preferences and values.
For example: people who like smaller machines with lots of bells and whistles are not likely to be happy with this machine, as it is big and very basic.
However, if you’re someone who values a quick and flavorful cup of coffee more than size and functionality, you will likely be pleased with this machine.
