Love French Press coffee? Love the color red? Then chances are good that this coffee maker is the one for you.

The Bodum Red Chambord 8-Cup Coffee Maker is a simple way to make full-flavored coffee, all while looking great in your kitchen. But don’t jump the gun and buy it just yet…there are some things you need to know before you decide to buy.

The Price

Bodum makes very high quality coffee products so the price for many is justified. Still, at $43 (at the time of writing), this isn’t the cheapest coffee maker given the simplistic functionality.

Score: 4 stars

The Coffee Maker Quality

As mentioned previously, Bodum makes quality coffee products…and this french press is no exception. But the fact that the product description claims that the coffee maker is dishwasher safe when it actually isn’t detracts from the overall score.

Score: 4.5 stars

The Coffee Quality

French Press quality coffee is arguably the best you can get. The mesh filter also does a great job of filtering out sediment.

Score: 5 stars

Ease of Use

French Press’ require you to grind your coffee coarsely, stir your grounds with hot water, let steep, and press. It’s a very simple process once you’ve done it once. Probably not as easy as an automatic drip coffee maker, but still not difficult at all.

Score: 4.5 stars

Cleaning Ease

Given that you can’t use your dishwasher on this, it’s a bit more difficult to clean. Scrubbing the filter and glass chamber can take a little work when removing all remaining grounds and oils. But the most cumbersome part of the cleaning process is removing the grounds. For more info on cleaning a French Press, read the post I wrote here.

Score: 3 stars

Durability

French Press coffee makers last a long time. Particularly those made by Bodum. Just clean thoroughly and be careful not to break the glass!

Score: 4 stars

Appearance

The red is a great look even though it doesn’t look quite the way it is pictured. But if you love red, you won’t be disappointed.

Score: 4.5 stars

Brew Speed

You have to boil your own water and allow the coffee grounds to steep for 4 minutes, so the whole process takes less than 10 minutes. But many automatic drip coffee makers brew at a much quicker speed.

Score: 3.5 stars

Final Thoughts

If you haven’t tried a French Press before, you may want to seriously consider it. You can extract a lot of flavor with this brewing process and it is actually the preferred method by professional coffee tasters. The Bodum brand is arguably the leader in French Press, so you really can’t go wrong if this is your first French Press. Just keep in mind that the brew process takes a bit longer and is more hand on than that of an automatic drip coffee maker.
